Solder Alloy Preform for the Aerospace Market

In this example, we applied our custom soldering techniques when our aerospace customer needed solder alloy preforms that would be used to braze ceramic substrates for an aerospace application. The material was a Braze Alloy 72Ag/28Cu, which is a silver-copper eutectic alloy, that was casted and then cold rolled with a series of annealing operations between rolling.  This alloy solder provides good density, tensile strength, elongation and electrical resistivity characteristics.

The part dimensions were 4.391” in length, 1.542” in width and a thickness of 0.002”. The preform was specially shaped and rolled to a tolerance of ±.0003”, and complied with customer supplied quality requirements.

The design and manufacture of this aerospace solder preform provided advantages such as consistent solder volume (compared to solder paste alone), dimensional stability, placement accuracy, and stronger joints. Furthermore, the removal of the requirement to add flux, as a manufacturing process, equates to a decrease in flux residue related problems. These advantages all lead to reduction in process time, fewer rejects and better quality control.
